  1. I am not sure if you received my last email but I would like to submit an application for the 2009 Progressive Employers of Canada List.

    Progressive Employers Application – LIJA

    Health benefits and personal/life balance coaching;
    LIJA recognizes the need for balance and has administered several programs, in the past, to promote health and well being such as on site yoga and Pilate’s classes. To encourage healthy snacking LIJA also provides an onsite healthy snack bar that carries everything from fresh fruit to granola bars to soup and cold drinks. LIJA staff are also offered a comprehensive benefits plan that includes extended health, personal well being days, dental, vacation, employee life insurance, employee accident insurance, travel accident insurance, and long term disability. In addition, a nurse is also brought in annually to administer the flu vaccine to any interested staff members.

    Access to emergency childcare;
    LIJA provides employees with ‘Care Days’ that can be taken to attend to a range of matters such as emergency family illness childcare, elder care and personal care.

    Flex-time;
    LIJA encourages all employees to achieve a work life balance. As a result, we offer employees a range of options including reduced work weeks, part-time and contract positions, and working remotely from home if required. LIJA has also been known to give all staff members the time off between Christmas and New Years to allow staff to spend time with their families.

    Gradual re-entry after maternity leave;
    Whilst there is no formal policy for this, it is sometimes the case that employees who were previously full time will return on a part-time basis, and in some cases will return to full time hours after a period of time. Business and operational requirements are taken into account and Managers will apply their discretion to each case. A gradual return to work policy can come into play post-mat leave for medical reasons.

    Lactation rooms;
    LIJA doesn’t currently have any designated lactation rooms, although there are meeting rooms which could be reserved for this purpose. With mat leaves being a year there has not been a request for space for that reason.

    Miscellaneous
    LIJA is unique in that it has a great workforce of highly talented and motivated individuals, 90% of which happen to be women. We celebrate motherhood by holding offsite baby showers for all of expecting staff members and encouraging new moms to bring their little ones in, while on maternity leave, for a visit, whenever possible. On top of all that, we have been known to hold random draws for hockey tickets as well as regular staff lunches. Once a month, LIJA also brings in a dessert of choice to celebrate employee birthdays.

    I have to say I find it very funny that telus made your list of mom (single parent is more PC) friendly companies. I for one had numerous issues getting a parental leave from telus when i took custody oif a child and now from dealing with the benefiets department here that they are not very friendly and do not even foolow the letter of the law when it comes to parental leave. I ended up haveing to file a grience which took over 6 months to settle in order for them to recognize my rights to parental leave. To this day well over a year now the policy that telus is using is still outdated and still they clkaim my parentaly leave was not something they had to allow dispite it being included in labour standards policies. Also I would say that the scheduling for single parents in telus is a joke, they dont have any accomadation for single parents who need to be at home after school and refuse to be compassionate about these needs and force employees into having to get medically supported documentation that would allow them to be home and have a schedule that accomadates being a single parent.
